Let’s admire the benefits of blueberries:
Blueberries are bursting with antioxidants, which are known immunity boosters. They help to defend cells from damage caused by harmful molecules known as free radicals, which occur naturally as a by-product of natural processes in your dog’s body. These free radicals are highly reactive, and by reacting with other molecules can cause damage to cell membranes and DNA. Many chronic diseases including heart disease and cancer have shown links to high levels of free radical damage. Antioxidants can help, as they neutralise free radicals to minimise their damaging effects to pupper’s body, as well as boosting cell metabolism.
Antioxidants are in particular great for senior dogs, as they reduce the effects of cognitive dysfunction and brain ageing. Amazing! While further research is warranted, there are promising studies that have shown ellagic acid, a micronutrient that has antioxidant properties and is found in blueberries, can help reduce cancer risk in animals.
Blueberries are high in Vitamin K, which our pups need to help blood clot. As pups zoom around outside, they’re bound to get a little scrape or too, so Vitamin K is essential in making sure their blood has optimal clotting ability.
