Beetroot powder: a vibrant, nutrient-packed ingredient

Fresh beetroot

It’s hard to beat beets when it comes to nutrients. Within that rich dark flesh lies a whole lot of goodness that is waiting to be harnessed and added to our delicious meals.

At Lyka we use beetroot powder, which is simply dehydrated beetroot. Don’t confuse this with beet pulp, the cheap by-product of sugar beets that is commonly used in kibble.

Why don’t we use beet pulp? It’s not just that we avoid lower-quality ingredients, we keep our pup’s safety top of mind. Studies link beet pulp to decreased taurine (an amino acid) in dogs, and low taurine levels can increase the risk of dilated cardiomyopathy – a serious condition where the heart beats irregularly.

Benefits of beetroot powder

Antioxidants, vitamins and minerals! Beet powder packs a powerful punch of benefits. Here are just a few:

  • Betalains, which is a group of antioxidants found in beetroot – it’s high levels of the main one (betanin) that gives beets their distinctive colour. Betalains have been shown to provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

  • Folic acid, which our puppers need for red blood cell production and DNA synthesis.

  • Manganese, which plays a part in energy production, as well as helping metabolise protein and carbohydrates, and make fatty acids.

  • Potassium, which helps regulate fluid balance, heart and muscle contractions – as well as having a role to play in sending nerve signals.
